Public art showcase created for Schiphol airport, Amsterdam.
Background: The global pandemic drastically changed people’s attitudes towards airports, studies show that nearly half of all travellers experience anxiety at airports. Schiphol set a project to divert some of it’s advertising space towards more cultural activities, with the hopes it would help improve the overall travel experience
Brief: Use public art to combat travel anxiety.
Approach: The key concept was to invite people to experience the airport as a museum, even if its just for 1 minute. I curated a selection of artworks the explored varying themes, but all had similar animation pace and overall ambient vibes - generating some calm, colour and curiosity in the busy industrial setting. I then wrote the slogan ‘For the next 30 seconds you are in a museum, not an airport’ to directly target travellers and invite them to take a moment from their stress to experience how art can have mood altering benefits.
Assets: The public art showcase was displayed on various departure screens around the airport and on their specialist giant obelisk screen. The campaign ran for 2 years and featured 6 different artist’s works throughout the time.
