From Heaven to Hell, Exhibition
Collaborators - Jurriaan Wesselink
What sculptures sit on the floors Heaven? What paintings hang on the walls of Hell? ‘From Heaven to Hell’ is an exhibition that challenges artists to showcase work they feel physically, conceptually or metaphorically belong in Heaven or Hell.
These two fascinating spiritual destinations influence our lives in many different ways. To some, they are grounding concepts that set the foundations for our behavioural and value systems. To others, they are just make-believe destinations which have been depicted throughout the history of art.
In this multi-space exhibition, we asked artists of today to put their own definition on these contrasting destinations. What modern creations should be immortalised in Heaven? What everyday occurrences should really belong in Hell?
The exhibition takes shape in two buildings on Amsterdam’s Nieuwe Leliestraat. Much like Heaven and Hell, the buildings contrast in appearance - one has brightly painted walls with a clean aesthetic. The other is a run down abandoned building filled with dark walls and rugged floors. The two spaces, situated only 100 metres apart, provide an environment for viewers to discover new representations of Heaven and Hell.
